Damocles

Damocles
I see the images of Graslei in Ghent and the Navigli in Milan, I hear the German protest against the ‘Beschränkungen’ and I read the ways out of the crown crisis hypothesized by populist politicians, and I ask myself: we all desire the sumptuous life of the past , but we don’t see the sword above our head. A sword supported by a horsehair.
In the sublime Syracusa Siciliana of Dionisio I, sovereign archirich, a courtier could enjoy a single day of splendor and pomp: the tyrant hung a sword over his head. A sword supported by a horsehair.
Cicero, who had found the story in a Greek source, noted in the Conversations at Tusculum: “Satisne videtur declares Dionysius nihil esse and the beatum to which semper aliqui terror impendeat? – It seems quite clear that Dionisio had declared that there is no happiness for the one on whom there is always some fear. ” (5.62)
It is necessary to be fully aware of this condition.
Damocles was perhaps better than most of us.
