ALMANACCO : JANNIS KOUNELLIS, Testo su George La Tour e frammenti d’intervista / Text on George La Tour and interview fragments // by/a cura di Andrea Fogli // italiano & english

_____________
Aprile 11, 2021

Unlike the previous chapters of the Almanac in which the sentences I selected were taken from well-known books and from well-known books and statements by our various masters, the sentences collected here and the text by and the text by J.K. dedicated to George La Tour are in fact unpublished. The statements that follow were in fact collected on 3 January 2012 in Jannis Kounellis’ studio in Umbertide and included in my text on him published in the weekly “Gli Altri”, a dynamic and non-conformist “niche” magazine of the libertarian left (“Il volto vivo della libertà” 30-1-2012). The text that closes the sequence was written by Kounellis for a special insert dedicated to George La Tour that I curated for the same weekly (“Gli Altri”, 2-12-2011).

FOLLOWS ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“Dialogue is a blessed thing, because you set yourself in motion towards others, out of  infinite love, not for other things, out of love, to see him and hear him, to understand that he also breathes, wants to speak his truth. These are the changes, nothing miraculous, the changes are in the discussions, between one breath and another. This also applies to art: a painting breathes, while photography (which is an Anglo-Saxon idea) does not breathe, it is like Ophelia, beautiful but dead. Today we have reached an extreme point where it seems that a woman is more beautiful in a photograph than she is, where you are shocked because the other person is breathing. Everyone knows that the dead are more beautiful than the living, but I am not an admirer of abstract beauty, I need the other to breathe in front of me, only then do I feel that I am still alive”.

“Horizontality has been a myth, even a political one, but it is absolutely not true that travel is horizontal. Globalisation rejects the idea that there is an Ithaca from which one departs and returns, an identity, a diversity to be defended, the starting point of a real dialectic”.

“What I don’t understand in Ives Klein is the idea of totality, of being theocratic. I like Jesus Christ, I don’t understand God. God is the beginning of the monochrome, and this idea of a God who cannot be seen and is represented as the soul of totality is a Protestant idea, far removed from the revolutionary gesture of Caravaggio, who more than any theological text embodies the true spirit of the Counter-Reformation. It is for this reason that I prefer Manzoni to Klein, the one who did the artist’s shit: he is one who does as the donkeys do and at a certain point he shoots one, he shoots one; he is an impertinent one who does not recognise God, therefore a son of Christ… God gives the orders, while the other one stabs him, he suffers a cause, and is therefore a different God, who resembles us: he has our characteristics, he feels pain in the same way, he loves. God, on the other hand, loves no one, he is Panteocrator, the creator of everything, so he does not love, he does not even have the time”.

“Pasolini wanted to be like a painter, and this honours him, together with his love for the classics: in him everything is classical, including the children, the ephebes. The artist always remains an ancient man and this is his main difference. Pasolini, like Caravaggio, prolongs the spirit of the Counter-Reformation, which is the defence of the classics, of the ancients”.

“There is no such thing as the past, the past that they wanted to flaunt in contrast to modernity. The past taken as a model of convenience. In reality, the past, if we consider it outside of the reactionary blunder, deserves the Deimoselles d’Avignon, deserves Pollock. That other is a swamp, a lake of hell, but artists like Titian and Caravaggio, like Picasso and Pollock are like “seafarers”: what they taught us is to set out on a journey, to know how to say “no”, the ability to wear that past to take it everywhere, the will to be free, to rejoin reality each time, its living face, not its simulacrum”.

“A painting defines itself inside and nobody can change it, you can just send it. My work, on the other hand, is defined when it is installed; it is born from dialogue with the place, with its history, but also from dialogue with others. A very strong dialectical availability is created, because you go towards the other, you are attracted by the other. The ideal place for this dialogue is not private galleries, but public spaces, not only museums, but abandoned factories, churches, theatres. Places that have a history and where everyone can enter, the ideal epicentre of a strong, frontal dialogue. This has been possible since the 1920s, when the idea of solo exhibitions was born, whereas before that you could find anything and everything in the Salons, from Fragonard to Van Gogh. Since then, the artist’s destiny has changed: the exhibition has become a “single act”, a unit with a moral purpose… I remember the old Sargentini who, when he sold a work, like many gallery owners of the time, put a red dot on it. With my exhibition of horses I also wanted to say “no” to all this: there is a painter who is aware that he is a painter but does not want red dots”.

(about his installation in a former slaughterhouse in Madrid)   “There men did nothing but kill, and the knife is there to indicate a fixed point, a centre that says “you can’t go beyond here”. It indicates a law: you don’t touch this centre, you go around, you do what you like, but you can’t touch this. And the law I mean is not the one established by nature, but by men”.

“I come from a land where there is the Parthenon, but on the other side there is also Leonidas saying to the Persians ‘come and get me’. I cannot consider the possibility that this extreme freedom is not paid for with death. I say this as an Italian, a sincere Italian. Rossellini in his genius understood where the problem was. Like Rimbaud when he said “I am another” or Byron who went to die in Greece following an ideal, a cultural model. Freedom is to strongly demand the ancient dignity, not to have submission as a perspective. Freedom, however, must be cultivated, freedom is not free, it is a promise to free it, because you promise to free it. Freedom should then be taught in schools, and this is the truly pedagogical thing they can do: teach freedom, the good that freedom brings, or at least try not to depress the sublime meaning of freedom. You have to tell people, you have to find the right figure to say all this, even if you don’t know if you have to write it in gold or with metal plates”.

Jannis Kounellis’s latest exhibition in Italy in the deconsecrated church of Sant’Andrea de Scaphis, curated by Gavin Brown’s Enterprise gallery … an installation that should have remained there in the city that is home to chapels with works by Caravaggio and other masters, but unfortunately this was not the case: commerce eats everything, including dreams.

A LATE AFTERNOON IN 1635

by Jannis Kounellis

Everything seems to be taking place on the stage of a suburban theatre. The light of the candle placed on the chair illuminates the body. Everything takes place in chiaroscuro, the light from outside, airy and fragrant, does not penetrate inside and the only light source that has an objective presence is the candle. Darkness is sovereign, the stillness serves to indicate an unrepeatable moment and the illuminated flesh does not break the silence. It is a cut in the darkness, the body of the candle with its iron base moves time, establishes the necessary light and illuminates the forehead.

It is the dramaturgy of a constructed silence, an anguished scream that lives out its day between the cuts between the body and the fabric, the only movement barely noticed is the glow of the candle.

Death is there but cannot be seen and the passing days change nothing on that stage. In this damp cellar environment, a one-act play is performed in the devastating silence lit by the flame. And the stillness is the necessary condition for the light of the candle to assume its leading role.

The red in La Tour’s painting has a unique intensity and seems to have been cut with a knife; it does not originate within the representation, it is built up years ago in the artist’s mind and then deposited within the image as in Malevich’s black square.

The flame is imagined as a cut by Fontana and all the scenes are constructed for a single spectator whom I imagine sitting on a country chair and reflecting in front of the image.

Sir Georges de La Tour you also belong to the family of the shadowy ones.
