The video recounts the creative journey of Iginio De Luca’s sound work IAILAT, which began with the installation in the Sound Corner of the Auditorium in February 2018. On the morning of Sunday 4 March, on the occasion of the Italian elections, the sound installation becomes a new Blitz by the artist and comes out of the foyer of the building designed by Renzo Piano to spread throughout the city, creeping into streets and squares until it reaches in front of the polling stations.  IAILAT is a sound track of the Italian anthem stretched and distorted, an 80% reduction in speed that makes the famous piece written by Mameli unrecognisable. Then – as now in this Covidian year – “this very long Fratelli d’Italia reveals itself as an effective metaphor for the country of Italy: the slowness and heaviness of an entire people incapable of emerging from the slime into which it has fallen. The title itself (an anagram of the word Italia) is presented as an image of a nation dismembered, divided and senseless, which becomes something else in an attempt to give itself a new configuration that never seems to arrive” (Silvano Manganaro).

LAVAMI, 2010

Proiezione laser della scritta “lavami” sulla cupola di S. Pietro, Roma, venerdì 5 novembre 2010 // Laser projection of the words “lavami” (wash me)  on the dome of St. Peter’s, Rome, Friday 5 November 2010

“LAVAMI” (wash me) is written in large letters on the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, like the light projections that announced Batman’s arrival in the night sky of Gotham City. LAVAMI is a graffiti of light similar to those drawn with the fingers on the dirty windows of parked cars. A virtual graffiti projected onto one of the most universal and contradictory symbols of our collective imagination is an invitation to the institution it represents to show its welcoming and prophetic face rather than the temporal and opportunistic one that all too often distinguishes it ”  (Franco Speroni)

PASTORE A MONTECITORIO, 2010

Video-proiezione su Palazzo Chigi e intervento audio – Roma, 11 dicembre 2010 // Video projection on Palazzo Chigi (Seat of Government) and audio intervention – Rome, 11 December 2010

After “Lavami”, the light projection that appeared a few weeks earlier on the dome of St. Peter’s, Iginio De Luca strikes again. Now Palazzo Chigi, the seat of government, is used as a large screen on which to project images of a flock filmed live, while all around transformed into a sound installation filled with the voice of a shepherd calling the flock.

ⱯIꓶⱯꓕI (L’ITALIA CAPOVOLTA), 2013

2 manifesti affissi, Casa della Memoria di via Tiburtina (San Lorenzo) e piazzale Aldo Moro / Università La Sapienza, Roma, 8 settembre 2013 // 2 posters affixed, House of Memory in via Tiburtina (San Lorenzo) and piazzale Aldo Moro / La Sapienza University, Rome, 8 September 2013

The photo is one of the cruellest and most emblematic of Italian history of the last century: Benito Mussolini, Claretta Petacci and the other members of the Italian Social Republic killed and hung upside down by their legs in Piazzale Loreto in Milan on 29 April 1945. The image, brutal and obscene, is as upside down as the words “ITALIA” that gives the blitz its title, 70 years after the Armistice of 8 September 1943, and at dawn on the day the Senate decides on Berlusconi’s disqualification. Seen like this, the characters in the photo seem to jump into the air with their arms raised in a sudden burst of life, a leap into the void, a suspended and ambiguous vision of alienating interpretation. It is pure illusion, fiction, a reversal of reality, like the Italy of today. The Italy of deceptions, of turncoats, the Italy always ready to overturn facts and things, of political reversals, of the transformism around the corner. A profoundly amoral country with no memory that is reflected in this sort of visual “somersault”.

VOTA PAOLO UCCELLO, 2014

Affissione di 10 maxi manifesti nei luoghi dell’arte, della cultura e del potere, Roma, mercoledì 21 maggio 2014 // Posting of 10 maxi-posters in places of art, culture and power, Rome, Wednesday 21 May 2014

PS: I 10 artisti candidati: Paolo Uccello, Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana,Piero Manzoni, Pino Pascali, Carla Accardi, Alighiero Boetti, Ketty La Rocca, Gino De Dominicis, Maurizio Cattelan.

“The artist is always busy writing a detailed history of the future because he is the only person aware of the nature of the present” (Marshall McLuhan).

What is missing from politics in this very sad election campaign? Most of all, politicians are missing; all that is left of them is the shell, the coloured mould. As a substitute, I nominate artists who, with their responsible madness, remove from the throne of parliamentary brutality men who are dissociated from reality and who no longer reflect themselves in collective thought. They do not reflect themselves because they do not exist, like ghosts in front of their own reflection. Art rises to power and with art comes culture, ideas, planning, farsightedness, courage, visionary spirit, moral honesty – and not only that – imagination, strength, coherence, if only towards oneself, suffering, passion, physical effort, joy, irony: concepts and feelings lost by politics, which no longer even finds the dignity of defeat, let alone the revolutionary turn at eighty euros a shot.
Despite the fact that he has not been with us for over five centuries, he is, together with all the candidate artists, the worthy representative of Italy abroad: this year at the European elections, VOTE PAOLO UCCELLO !

Iginio de Luca

PS: The 10 candidate artists: Paolo Uccello, Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana,Piero Manzoni, Pino Pascali, Carla Accardi, Alighiero Boetti, Ketty La Rocca, Gino De Dominicis, Maurizio Cattelan.
